SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - Mayor Mike Devlin issued a proclamation honoring emergency medical services personnel at the borough council meeting Wednesday.
The mayor announced the week of May 20-26 as Emergency Medical Services Week and thanked those who help save the lives of others. Four members of the Pottsville/Schuylkill Have Area EMS stood by the mayor..
In other business, council approved a request by the Schuylkill Haven Area Business Association to use the downtown for the Walk, Wine and Wander in the borough. The event will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. June 21. Wine tasting, art, music and food will be available.
Councilwoman Ruth Tucci announced the second field at "The Island" is ready for play. She said the scoreboard could be up by next week weather permitting. Fireworks will be held at the Island on July 14 at dusk, Tucci said.
A recreation board meeting will be held at 6 p.m. June 3 in the council chambers. Tucci also said seven people were hired by the recreation board to work during the summer. They will start the second week of June and will be paid minimum wage, she said.
Also, Councilman David Gerber said the Memorial Day Parade will take place May 28 in the borough.
"That event has actually been growing," he said, adding the speaker hasn't been named yet.
Councilman Jerry Bowman reminded those in attendance of the farmer's market held at the borough hall parking lot on the third Thursday of the month during the summer.
Devlin also made a reminder of the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life taking place this week in Pottsville and of the Schuylkill River Sojourn on June 2.
"When you see all those canoes in the water, it's really amazing," he said.
Council President Marlin Berger Jr. asked solicitor Mark Semanchik about a specific piece of correspondence for council members regarding Allegheny Cooperative Inc. He said he needed clarification on what the letter said.
Semanchik said the cooperative will review what the usage is for the 18 municipal governments involved in the cooperative and adjust allocations as needed, he said.
Carl Berger, economic development director, also provided an overview of what he does in his capacity as director and the history of the how the office came to be. Berger was appointed by council in November of 2011.
