Schuylkill County Sears, Kmart to stay open

FRACKVILLE - So far, Kmart and Sears at the Schuylkill Mall are not on the list as part of the 100 to 120 store closings announced by Sears Holding Corp.

Further information on the remaining closures will be posted to www.searsmedia.com when available, according to the company.

A list on the company website provides locations of 79 stores in the United States that are closing. No date is listed for the closures. Two Sears locations in Pennsylvania are on the list: one in Upper Darby and the other in Pottstown.

Florida has the most stores listed for closure on the list with 11.

A phone call to the company was not returned Thursday.

The total number of employees that will be affected by the closures of the stores isn't known at this time, the company said on its website. However, the typical store employs between 40 and 80 people, it said.

The company announced Tuesday it was closing the stores and starting other measures to improve the outlook of the company.

"Given our performance and the difficult economic environment, especially for big-ticket items, we intend to implement a series of actions to reduce on going expenses, adjust our asset base and accelerate the transformation of our business model. These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail - at the store, online and in the home," Chief Executive Officer Lou D'Ambrosio said in Tuesday's press release.
