n Girardville: Curbside recycling in the borough is set for May 29 and 30, according to a press release from borough hall. Residents should place all items out both days, including newspaper and cardboard, clear, brown and green glass and tin and aluminum cans, and plastics Nos. 1 and 2. Newspapers, according to the release, must bundled and tied or in brown paper bags and cardboard must be flattened. Glass must be placed in one container and cans in another. For dropoff recycling, dumpsters are on site permanently. However, all rules must be followed. To leave recyclables on the ground or on top of the bins is littering. n Harrisburg: The Tamaqua Volunteer Firefighters' Relief Association is in compliance "with tested laws and regulations," Pennsylvania Auditor Jack Wagner said in a press release. His report covers the audit period Jan. 1, 2008, to Dec. 31, 2009. In commending the Tamaqua association, Wagner said, "The proper management of funds ensures that they will continue to support local volunteer firefighters who bravely put themselves at risk to help protect their neighbors' health and property." VFRAs, Wagner said in the release, are nonprofit organizations established "to afford financial protection to volunteer firefighters who suffer misfortune as a result of their participation in the fire service." They receive state aid from a 2 percent state tax on fire insurance purchased by commonwealth residents from insurance companies incorporated outside the state.
n McAdoo: The Kayla Bahrey Memorial Fund is holding a tricky tray auction until May 26 at the Blaine Street Cafe. All proceeds will benefit the McAdoo Community Civic Association.
n Minersville: A benefit in memory of Dennis Reichert, Minersville, who died on March 7 as result of an ATV accident, will take place from 3 p.m. to midnight June 2 at the Sunny Rod and Gun Club. n Schuylkill Haven: Schuylkill Haven Senior Citizens Association members enjoyed their spring dinner held May 7 at St. Paul's UCC, Summer Hill. Following dinner, the group enjoyed a performance by "Elvis" via impersonator T.J. Fitzpatrick. Door prizes included Boyer's Market gift cards and brightly colored potted dahlias. The next regular association meeting will be 7 p.m. June 11 at the senior center, 340 Haven St. Members and guests are welcome. People 55 and older are welcome to visit the center and join the group.
n Shenandoah: The Greater Shenandoah Area Historical Society, 201 S. Main St., will present the Eckley Miner's Village Skit Players and 19th century funeral customs at 6 p.m. June 5. The public is welcome to attend. There is no admission charge.
