ORWIGSBURG - A Berks County man faces Schuylkill County Court action after waiving his right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday on a charge that he stole money and a cell phone in April from a car parked at the North Manheim Township plant where he worked.
Daniel L. Rhodes, 24, of 1206 Old Route 22, Lenhartsville, must defend against a charge of theft from a motor vehicle that Magisterial District Judge James R. Ferrier bound over for the county court.
State police at Schuylkill Haven allege that between 5:20 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. April 6, Rhodes took two bags of coins and a cell phone from a blue 2010 Hyundai Accent that was parked at Cardinal Systems, 250 Route 61 South.
Police said Rhodes took the items from the car, which belonged to a vending machine repairman, and put one of the money bags under the chiller unit at the plant.
According to police, Rhodes admitted taking the bags and putting all the coins into one of them, but denied taking the cell phone.
Rhodes is free on $25,000 unsecured bail pending further court action in his case.
Other defendants whose cases Ferrier considered on Tuesday, the charges against them and the judge's dispositions of the matters included:
Daniel K. Miller, 33, of 108 E. Liberty St., Schuylkill Haven; driving under the influence, speeding and careless driving; right to preliminary hearing waived, charges bound over for court.
Vadim S. Polyakov, 35, of Pottsville; resisting arrest, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct; right to preliminary hearing waived, charges bound over for court.
Robert D. Steffie Jr., 41, of 114 Vaux Ave., Tremont; receiving stolen property, conspiracy, possession of drug paraphernalia and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle; right to preliminary hearing waived, possession of drug paraphernalia charge withdrawn, other charges bound over for court.
Jared T. Stessalavage, 24, of 636 W. Market St., Orwigsburg; possession of drug paraphernalia; charges held for court after preliminary hearing at which the defendant did not appear. Ferrier asked county court to issue bench warrant for Stessalavage.
