Eating contests, games highlight Kids Day at Schuylkill County Fair

SUMMIT STATION - Tuesday was all about the kids at the Schuylkill County Fair.

From a fair Olympics to animal shows to eating contests, there were plenty of activities for young ones from the county and beyond.

"Kids Day is always an exciting day with all the different groups that have come in, the school groups and those from out of the area as far away as Scranton," said fair President Paul T. Kennedy.

Kennedy said that the fair had about 1,000 group admissions Tuesday of just children, and for those children, many organizations helped put on different activities and programs.

The programs included Ag Area Activities sponsored by Susquehanna Bank, make-your-own monster truck sponsored by Walk-In Art Center and a kids cooking contest sponsored by Stepping Stones Rehabilitation.

"All the extra programs we could put on throughout the day are just absolutely wonderful," Kennedy said.

At the kids tent, some of the activities included multiple contests such as Jell-O eating, ice cream eating, coloring, jump roping, pie-eating and milk-chugging contests.

During the pie-eating contest, contestants at four tables were randomly given either a piece of blueberry, cherry, apple or peach pie.

With their hands behind their back, the first at each table to finish their piece moved on to the final round, where there was only one winner.

Brook Koch-Guers, superintendent of major contests at the fair, who is also from Re/Max Realty and was running the kids tent, said that there were many children participants Tuesday.

There were 91 children in the ice cream eating contest, while there were 68 children in the Jell-O eating contest, Koch-Guers said.

While all of the events went on for children during the day, Kennedy said they also continued throughout the evening with extra shows by Star Family Circus, folk singer Ray Owen and magician Tom Yurasits.

"It's nice and today really is all about the kids," Kennedy said. "We're kid-friendly all week but we went off the wall today and then Saturday it's supposed to be a repeat of today with all the kids' activities going on."

According to statistics from Kennedy, Monday's attendance was 3,919 people, a 30 percent increase from Monday at the fair last year.

The Schuylkill County Fair will continue through Saturday, with Happy Birthday Fair and 4-H Day today.
