With the help of the community, the Schuylkill County United Way will be able to fill about 1,200 backpacks.

"We went well over our goal," said William J. Folk III, director of community relations for the Schuylkill County United Way.

The goal was 1,012 backpacks, he said. That number was based off last year's tally and what members needed. At last count, 1,165 backpacks were needed, he said. The backpacks will be stuffed Aug. 6 or Aug. 7 at the Salvation Army, Pottsville. They will then be distributed to those in need.

"We're still getting some donations. We're thrilled with the donations we received so far," he said.

This is the 10th year for the effort that started last month with the arrival of the vehicles at the three drop-off points inside the Cressona Mall, Fairlane Village mall, Pottsville, and Schuylkill Mall, Frackville.

Some of the backpacks - 50 in all - will go to the Pine Grove Area School District, Folk said.

"All in all, there (were) 20 total individuals or companies that have donated to 'Stuff the Bus,' " he said.

Donations received at the mall locations were also appreciated, he said. People could also donate at the Schuylkill Mall during the Schuylkill Idol competition.

School supplies will be accepted at the Salvation Army, 400 Sanderson St., Pottsville, until Aug. 6.

Folk said folders, paper, glue and other school-related items are still needed. Donations are accepted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Salvation Army.

Financial contributions can also be sent to the Schuylkill County United Way, 91. S. Progress Ave, Pottsville, PA 17901.
