Frackville: The Frackville Ministerium Food Bank will be open from 9 to 10 a.m. Jan. 19 to serve eligible families in the borough. New applicants will need proof of eligibility - a Frackville borough address. The food bank is at Zion Lutheran Church, Oak and Nice streets.
Harrisburg: Pennsylvania Department of Transportation driver license and photos centers will be closed Saturday through Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, according to a PennDOT press release. Customers may still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services online through PennDOT's Driver and Vehicle Services website - www.dmv.state.pa.us. Driver and vehicle online services are available 24/7 and include driver's license and photo ID renewals, vehicle registration renewal, driver-history services, changes of address, driver license and vehicle registration restoration letters, and exam scheduling. There are no additional fees for using online services. A complete listing of PennDOT driver and photo license center closings in 2011 is available on the website under "News, Stats and Facts." In the release, PennDOT also reminded motorists they can visit 511pa.com or call 511 from any phone to check traffic conditions before heading out.
Minersville: During a special meeting of the Minersville Area school board earlier this month, members appointed Robert W. Keifer, Llewellyn, to fill the board vacancy.
Pottsville: McCann School of Business & Technology Pottsville campus will host a Team U open house event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. According to a press release, the event will be an opportunity for prospective students to get more information about the campus and for the members of a student's support system to learn more as well. "Most students have family or friends that help them decide which school is right for them," Shannon Brennan, campus director, said in the release. "McCann recognizes that fact and has a number of activities and presentations planned that will help the entire family support system gain the information needed to provide an informed decision about whether or not McCann is the right school for a particular student." Activities will include financial aid presentations, tours, career services presentations, demonstrations of hands-on training offered in campus programs, refreshments and an opportunity to meet some of our student body. Pottsville: The Schuylkill County Immunization Coalition, in a Schuylkill County's VISION newsletter, said it is not too late for people to get the flu vaccine. Influenza usually peaks after the holidays. Last year it peaked in February. The flu season can go into the early spring. To find out where shots are available, visit www.flu.gov. Concerning other VISION news, officials noted that during November, public meetings were held to present information on the proposed Federally Qualified Health Center for Schuylkill County. The meetings were attended by many who expressed strong support for such a center. In 2012, according to the newsletter, there will be additional opportunities for the public to learn more about the project. People are urged to consider attending a public meeting to learn how the health center will serve the community. Dates of future public meetings will be published in upcoming VISION newsletters.
Shenandoah: Greater Shenandoah Area Chamber of Commerce Secretary Betty Ann Bugden said via email candy bars are available again in a chamber fundraiser. Chamber candy sale coordinator Beth Cataldo, manager of the Shenandoah branch of National Penn Bank, recently informed Bugden about the arrival of additional boxes of candy. The bars are available for $1 each by stopping at National Penn Bank, Main and Centre streets, calling Bugden at 570-462-0811 or emailing her at hairlady@shenhgts.net.
