SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - Stand and deliver.
That's what about 10 Penn State Schuylkill students in public speaking classes will do Nov. 29 as they present informative speeches during the annual Informative Speech Contest.
The event will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Student Community Center's John E. Morgan Auditorium.
"It will be a fun activity for everybody, and people can come and watch the speeches," said Valerie Schrader, assistant professor of communication arts and sciences at Penn State Schuylkill.
Schrader said the top two students from each of the five public speaking sections will present their speeches.
While she said each professor has a different way of running classes, she lets her students choose their speech topic. Some of the topics include the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Drehersville, astrology, health issues and the Pottsville Maroons.
"There's a wide variety of topics," Schrader said. "It's anything they would like to educate the audience about."
Three judges will rate the students on delivery, organization and how well sources are cited.
Judges are usually alumni, but people from the community who may have a connection to the campus may also judge the contest.
The contest's top three students will receive prizes.
Schrader said a persuasive speech contest is slated for the spring. She added the fall semester contest so all students have an opportunity to participate in such an event.
The event is open to the public and there will be light refreshments served after the contest.
