Tamaqua man dies in Orwigsburg crash

ORWIGSBURG - A 59-year-old Tamaqua man died Monday in a one-vehicle crash on Route 443.

According to state police Trooper Timothy Rymarkiewicz of the Schuylkill Haven station, Mark Beltz suffered life-threatening injuries when his 2001 Ford Explorer rolled over onto its roof about 10:35 a.m. He was taken to Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson Street, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is pending.

According to state police, Beltz was traveling east on Route 443 when his vehicle went off the south side of the road for an unknown reason. The SUV traveled about 90 feet and hit a road sign, then went up an embankment about 20 feet high. It then struck some bushes, spun clockwise while descending and flipped onto its roof in the eastbound lane.

Police said Beltz was wearing a seat belt.

State police and Orwigsburg and Landingville fire departments responded along with Orwigsburg ambulance and Pottsville- Schuylkill Haven Area EMS.

Orwigsburg Fire Department First Assistant Chief Jesse Zimmerman said the man was the only person in the SUV.
