n Ashland: At a recent meeting of the borough council, fire Chief Philip Groody asked residents to help keep fire hydrants clear of snow. He also reminded residents to be cautious with auxiliary heating systems such as space heaters and to follow the manufacturer's specifications in order to prevent fires. Every person in charge or control of any building or lot of land fronting a paved sidewalk - whether it is an owner, tenant or occupant - is responsible for snow and ice removal. Officials said borough Ordinance 530 requires that a path at least 30 inches wide be cleared on a sidewalk within 24 hours of the end of a snowfall, sleet or ice event. Corner properties must have sidewalks cleaned on both sides. In case the snow and ice on a sidewalk has become so hard that it cannot be removed without likelihood of damage to the sidewalk, sand or other abrasives can be spread to make travel reasonably safe. However, once weather permits, the sidewalk must be cleared with a path at least 30 inches wide.

n Girardville: There will be no curbside recycling in the borough through March, borough Secretary Mary Ambrose said in a press release. Curbside recycling will resume in April. The Schuylkill County drop-off recycling bins are available for borough and county residents near the municipal building. However, all rules must be followed, including not leaving items outside the gates if they are locked, placing recyclables in the correct section of the dumpsters and removing all glass, cans, plastic, paper and cardboard from plastic bags before placing them in the dumpsters. People who violate the rules can face citations.
