ORWIGSBURG - The Schuylkill YMCA will open an extension office in Orwigsburg.
Called the YMCA South Schuylkill Extension, the office will be on the second floor of Boyer's Food Markets, 329 S. Liberty St.
"We do not have an exact date. Our goal, though, is to be ready by the week of Feb. 18," Wayne Stump, Schuylkill Y executive director, said Friday.
A lease has yet to be signed for the 1,500-square-foot space, he said.
"There's not a lot involved to move there," he said.
Interest in the Orwigsburg site began about two weeks ago, he said, adding that it was "just one of those opportunities that we came across."
Spinning classes, yoga and fitness training and other classes will be held there, while the Y-Discovery classes for preschool children and their parents or caregivers are also planned for the site.
Stump said there are no set hours established yet for the site, which will be "more of a program center than a facility."
A membership will be offered for the Orwigsburg site. Y members in the city may also use the Orwigsburg location.
Members will pay a member rate for classes at the site and nonmembers will pay a different rate, Stump said. Details are still being worked out.
The Y site at 520 N. Centre St., Pottsville, is about 20,000 square feet.
The Y is purchasing spin bikes and other equipment from Bonnie Boyer, who leased the space from HJJT Family Limited Partnership, to which members of the Boyer family belong, Bonnie Boyer said Monday.
Boyer said she had operated 2nd Story Yoga & Fitness at the site for about seven years. She is still giving classes now but announced in her December newsletter that she was going to close. She will continue to provide classes but wanted to scale back her business to focus more on her personal life.
Some Y programs are offered in the Tremont borough building, among them volleyball and an indoor soccer league, Stump said.
Orwigsburg borough leaders embraced the Y's extension.
"We're happy to hear the YMCA is moving to town and providing another opportunity for folks to stay healthy," Borough Manager Mike Lonergan said.
