Vehicle strikes

2 girls at bus stop

SUMMIT HILL - A vehicle hit two girls at a bus stop in Carbon County on Thursday morning, police said.

Summit Hill police said an 8-year-old girl was hit by the front end of a vehicle while she waited for a bus on Market Street at the post office, near West Hazard Street. Police said the driver, who is a woman, also ran over a 7-year-old girl's foot.

At least one of the girls was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest for treatment, police said. Their conditions were not available Thursday.

The driver spoke to police but had not been charged.

The incident was still under investigation Thursday and charges are pending the outcome, police said.

Police probe

burglary attempt

KELAYRES - State police at Frackville are investigating an attempted burglary during the overnight hours Saturday into Sunday at 13 1/2 Third St. in this Kline Township village.

Police said Cynthia Mercuri discovered footprints in the snow outside of her bedroom window but no one entered the home and nothing was taken.

Man faces

burglary charges

NEW PHILADELPHIA - A 49-year-old Fountain Springs man was arrested by state police at Frackville and charged in connection with a burglary on New Philadelphia Road in Blythe Township sometime Saturday or Sunday.

Police said Duane H. Maurer was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge James K. Reiley, Pottsville, on charges of conspiracy to commit burglary, conspiracy to commit theft by unlawful taking and conspiracy to commit unauthorized use of an automobile.

He was committed to Schuylkill County Prison unable to post 10 percent of $20,000 bail set by Reiley.

Police said a burglary was discovered on the property belonging to the estate of David Osceles that involved the theft of an automobile, automotive parts and household electronics. The stolen automobile was discovered a short distance from the scene and witnesses saw another automobile fleeing the area.

Based on this information, police said a broadcast was sent through the Schuylkill County Communications Center and the vehicle was stopped a short time later by Pottsville police.

Some of the electronics were recovered with the stolen vehicle and some of the automotive parts were found in the vehicle, police said, adding that the investigation is continuing and that at least one other conspirator is being sought.

No one hurt

in city crash

No one was injured in a crash in the 1200 block of West Market Street about 2:55 p.m. Feb. 1.

Pottsville police said Miranda Gibble, 22, of Pottsville, was backing her Ford Focus out of a private driveway at 1228 W. Market St. and drove into the path of a Toyota Corolla driven by Danielle Heckman, 24, of Pottsville.

The impact caused Gibble's vehicle to hit a parked Ford F-250 owned by Edward Malge, Pottsville, police said.

Gibble will be cited for causing the accident, police said, and Pottsville firefighters assisted at the scene.

2 charged with

Wal-Mart thefts

HOMETOWN - Two people were arrested by Rush Township police in connection with an incident at Wal-Mart about 11:10 a.m. Sunday.

Police said Terry L. Dietterick Jr., 36, of Berwick, is facing charges of DUI-controlled substance, driving while under suspension, retail theft and conspiracy to commit retail theft for stealing a television valued at $68.

In addition, Amy D. Humphries, 31, of Berwick, is facing charges of retail theft and conspiracy after stealing items valued at $182.32.

After the two fled the store, an alert was broadcast by the Schuylkill County Communications Center and the two were apprehended a short time later by Kline Township police.

After being taken into custody, police said Dietterick was taken to St. Luke's Hospital-Miners Campus, Coaldale, for a blood-alcohol test.

Charges against the man and woman will be filed with Magisterial District Judge Stephen J. Bayer, Tamaqua.

Haven woman

not hurt in crash

DARKWATER - A 40-year-old Schuylkill Haven woman escaped injury when the 2002 Ford Focus she was driving crashed on Route 61, just north of Darkwater Road in New Castle Township, at 4:38 p.m. Monday.

State police at Frackville said Roxana Achach was driving south in the left lane when she failed to follow a right curve in the road, causing her car to spin, go off the road and strike and damage a guiderail. The car came to a stop about 30 feet south of where it struck the guiderail in the passing lane facing south, police said.

Saint Clair firefighters and EMS assisted at the scene and police said Achach will receive a citation as a result of the crash.

Police investigate

Delano break-in

DELANO - A burglary at 66 Lakeside Ave. between 2 p.m. Sunday and 5:30 p.m. Monday is being investigated by state police at Frackville.

Police said someone entered the home by cutting a screen to unlock the door and then broke the door jam to a basement door to get into the living area of the home.

The person then stole various items including a kitchen microwave stand valued at about $50 and also caused $50 in damage, police said.

No one hurt

in I-81 crash

HEGINS - No injuries were reported in a one-vehicle crash in the southbound lanes of Interstate 81, at mile marker 111.3 in Frailey Township, at 12:12 a.m. Tuesday.

State police at Frackville said Susan E. Tegethoff, 46, of Carlisle, was driving a Ford F-150 south in the right lane when she lost control, went off the road and up an embankment, hitting several trees before becoming lodged in the wooded area.

Police said the woman had a strong odor of alcohol on her breath and was taken to Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson Street for a blood-alcohol test.

Charges are pending the results of the test, police said.
