Eagle rank

Nathanael C. Marino, 15, of Orwigsburg Boy Scout Troop 624, earned the highest rank in Boy Scouting on Jan. 18.

His Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project involved disassembling and refurbishing an 11-year-old wooden structure playground and reassembling it at Kimmel's Evangelical Free Church, Orwigsburg. The playground was donated by Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Boran, Orwigsburg.

Nathanael hauled the disassembled pieces to his own backyard in May and spent the summer cleaning, staining, painting, replacing hardware and accessories and making structural improvements to the solid redwood playground. He led a team of fellow Scouts, family members and other volunteers in hauling the pieces to the churchyard and reassembling the structure.

In addition to the donated playground, Andy Geary Awnings, Pottsville, donated a custom-made replacement canopy for the castle section; Luckenbill Brothers Paving and Excavating, Schuylkill Haven, excavated and leveled the land, and S.R. Sloan Manufacturing, Orwigsburg, provided the wood chips, hauling trailer and back hoe for hoisting.

Pastor Preston Broadhurst of Kimmel's Church served as the project beneficiary representative. A total of 219.5 man-hours were used in the three-month project.

Nathanael is a freshman in the college preparatory curriculum at Blue Mountain High School. He competes on the high school swimming, soccer and track and field teams, plays in the school band and drama club pit orchestra and is an active member of Kimmel's Church youth group. He is a member of Schuylkill YMCA swim team for three years.

Nathanael is a son of Dr. Glen and Heather Marino, Orwigsburg. Boy Scout Troop 624 is led by Scoutmaster James Stokes.
