School notes, Feb. 12, 2012

Pottsville Area

Madison Rushannon, Pottsville, a fourth-grade student at John S. Clarke Elementary Center, Pottsville, recently accepted an anonymous donation of blankets for hospitalized veterans.

Her school participates in the "Happiness for Hospitalized Veterans" program each year. This program helps to collect everyday comfort items to be given to hospitalized veterans during the holiday season.

A representative from the Veterans Administration came to collect the blankets and personally thank her for her kindness toward the veterans.

Tamaqua Area

Shane Mulligan, a junior at Tamaqua Area High School, was selected to participate in the 2012 District 10 Chorus Festival.

The event was held Jan. 26 through 28 at Bangor Area High School, with concerts for the public presented Jan. 27 and 28. The group was comprised of students from Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton and Schuylkill counties.

This marks the second year that Shane has been selected for District 10 Chorus.

He is a son of Ildiko and Tom Maurer, Tamaqua and John Mulligan.

Blue Mountain

Jeffrey Lazarchick, a sophomore at Blue Mountain High School, was selected to participate in the 2012 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 10 Chorus Festival at Bangor Area High School.

Jeffrey is a member of the chorus and handbell choir. In the past two years, he has participated in choral festivals at the county level and this year at the district level. He is also a member of the symphonic band, jazz band and marching bands and is the drum major for the 2011-12 marching band season.

Jeffrey has also participated in band festivals at the county level. In addition to his choral and band activities, Jeffrey is a member of the Blue Mountain High School drama club. He has had leading roles in the high school musical productions. He played Corey in "Back to the '80s" and Curly in "Oklahoma!"

Jeffrey is a son of Dean and Lorena Lazarchick, Schuylkill Haven.

Pine Grove Area

Rachel M. Troxell, a senior at Pine Grove Area High School, recently participated in the 2012 District 10 Band Festival at Nazareth Area High School. The event featured 149 student musicians from among 55 school districts in Berks, Lehigh, Northampton and Schuylkill counties. Rachel was chosen as first flute, fourth chair.

She is a daughter of Marlene and Michael Troxell, Pine Grove, and a granddaughter of George and Suzanne Troxell, Pottsville, and Ivan and Marie Loy, Pine Grove.
