Students of the month, Feb. 12, 2012

Shen Rotary

Janette Lukashunas, a senior at Shenandoah Valley High School, was chosen as student of the month for December by the Shenandoah Rotary Club.

Janette's high school activities include volleyball, softball, National Honor Society, Learn 'n Serve, float, formal/prom committees, Schuylkill County Leadership Program, Spirit Program, Talent Search, honor guard and student council. She is a class ambassador and a Wendy's Heisman School Award recipient.

Her out-of-school activities include various Learn 'n Serve projects, Kielbasi Fest, Heritage Day and volunteering as an assistant summer softball coach.

A daughter of David and Janet Lukashunas, Shenandoah Heights, Janette plans to attend college and majoring in psychology with an interest in a career with the state police.

Mahanoy Middle

Emily Bruce and Jacob Ulicny were named students of the month for December by the faculty of Mahanoy Area Middle School. The program is sponsored by the Mahanoy City Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 695.

A distinguished honor student, Emily is involved in the birthday club, chorus, National Junior Honor Society, seventh- and eighth-grade girls basketball and biddy basketball. She is a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Barnesville, where she is an acolyte and junior council member and volunteer with church functions.

Emily also volunteers at Santa's Workshop. A daughter of Vladimir and Debra Bruce, Barnesville, she plans to attend college and major in pharmacy.

Jacob, an honor student, is chorus secretary and eighth-grade class secretary. He is member of the birthday club, ski club, Mahanoy Area marching and concert bands, National Junior Honor Society, Paw Print, Theatre Arts, swim team and homecoming float committee.

In the community, Jacob is a member of the ACTION Youth Group and volunteers with the American Cancer Society and Santa's Workshop. He is a member of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Roman Catholic Parish, Mahanoy City, where he is a greeter.

Jacob is a son of Jane Ulicny, New Boston, and the late Frank Ulicny. He plans to attend college.

Minersville Area

Minersville Area High School seniors Jherica Sborz and Cody Kelly were named students of the month for December.

Jherica serves as secretary of the National Honor Society and student council and is a member of the Spanish Club. She volunteers for Branch/Miners Teener League Association, attends St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Parish, Minersville and works at BG's Value Market.

She is a daughter of Joseph and Susan Sborz, Llewellyn, and her future plans are to attend Shippensburg University to study pre-veterinary medicine.

Cody is drum major of the marching band and band historian. He serves as choir treasurer and a choir accompanist and student conductor. He is a member of the National Honor Society, concert and jazz bands, choir ensemble, concert choir and pit orchestra.

Cody is a member of SADD, TAT, prom committee, senior class steering committee and the Minersville Area Drug & Alcohol Task Force. He was also selected to participate in Schuylkill County Band and Schuylkill County Chorus.

In the community, Cody is a blood drive volunteer and donor and a member of the Minersville Area Alumni Theater Association, Cressona Community Band and Gabriel Youth Orchestra. He helps with St. Michael the Archangel Parish's block party and serves as a festival aide for St. Joseph Center for Special Learning, Pottsville. He was selected to participate in the Pennsylvania All State Lions Band.

A son of Kelly and Shawn Kelly, Minersville, Cody plans to attend Mansfield or West Chester universities to major in music education.
