SARCC to host 3rd annual 'Walk a Mile in Her Shoes'

It's almost that time of the year for the men of Schuylkill County to break out their heels.

The Sexual Assault Resource and Counseling Center of Schuylkill and Lebanon counties will host its third annual "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" fundraiser April 25.

The International Men's March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault and Gender Violence was created by Frank Baird in 2001, according to the organization's website at www.walkamileinhershoes.org. The event has since been used to raise millions of dollars for local rape crisis centers, domestic violence shelters and other sexualized violence education, prevention and remediation programs, as well as raise awareness about rape, sexual assault and gender violence.

More than 100 men have participated in the event each year in Schuylkill County. Women are also invited to register and march to show support.

"The men's march in heels is a fun and friendly way to raise awareness and funds for a cause that might otherwise be difficult to talk about," Jenny Murphy-Shifflet, SARCC's president/CEO for Schuylkill County, said in a prepared statement.

Registration begins at 4:30 p.m. at the Humane Fire Company at Laurel Boulevard and Second Street, Pottsville. The walk will start at 5:30 p.m.

Cost is $10 per participant and there will be a limited number of high-heeled shoes available for a $5 rental fee.

SARCC provides free and confidential counseling, as well as intervention for children, adults and families located in Schuylkill County.
