Minersville Area Skatepark Association denied Tony Hawk grant

MINERSVILLE - The Minersville Area Skatepark Association announced Monday that it was not selected to receive a grant from the Tony Hawk Foundation.

Secretary Bobbie Domlesky said that although their name was not listed as a recipient on the foundation website for the Feb. 1 deadline, they aren't giving up hope and will apply again for the next submission date May 15.

"We've been following it for a couple years now and before there was no May submission," Domlesky said. "Maybe we'll be at the top of that list."

The Tony Hawk Foundation gives a minimum of $1,000 and a maximum of $25,000.

While the association is hoping to receive a grant, members said Monday they never depended on it to have the skatepark built and are still raising funds to build it whether they receive a Tony Hawk grant or not. The group is hoping to break ground in late spring on land it's leasing from the borough near New Minersville Fire Company.

Treasurer Fran Mickey said that the association's current balance is $12,304.45.

In the most recent fundraisers, it raised $1,021.66 from Bon-Ton Community Days coupon booklets in the fall, which included $380 from the coupon book sales and $641 from the bonus pot split between all the sellers.

It also raised $401.92 from its March soup sale.

The next fundraiser will be a spaghetti dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 21 at New Minersville Fire Company, Line Street, Minersville.

As with the previous spaghetti dinners, the menu will include spaghetti with meat sauce, bread and salad.

Tickets will be $7 for adults and $4 for children and patrons may dine in or take out. There will also be baked goods and 50/50 chances for sale.

The association said tickets will be available at the door but they may sell out, so advance tickets are available by calling Jim Domlesky at 570-294-3110.
