animal charge
SHENANDOAH - A 28-year-old Shenandoah man was charged by borough police for allowing his dog to run at large after an incident in the 200 block of West Lloyd Street about 3:10 p.m. April 19.
Police said Rashean Strange, 221 W. Coal St., will have to answer to the charge before Magisterial District Judge Anthony J. Kilker, Shenandoah.
Police said officers received a report of a large gray pit bull running around in the area of the 200 block of West Lloyd Street. The caller reported being afraid because a school bus drops off children in the area and didn't want the dog to attack them.
The dog was located, taken to Strange's home and released, police said adding that Strange told officers the dog keeps jumping a high fence in the back of his yard.
California teen
to face charges
SHENANDOAH - A 19-year-old from California found urinating on the sidewalk near a bar in Shenandoah about 12:32 a.m. Saturday has been charged with a variety of offenses.
Shenandoah police Officer Tyler Dissinger noticed Pedro Santos outside the Mexican Bar urinating Saturday. He told Dissinger his name was Jose Santis and that he lived at 30 S. Catherine St. He was taken to that address and then told the officer he didn't live there. He later told Patrolman Robert Senape that friends had guns and attempted to grab Senape's Taser.
Senape grabbed Santos' shirt and then the teen took off running. Senape gave chase but lost Santos. He then got back into the police car with Dissinger and attempted to locate Santos.
After another chase on foot, Santos fought with Dissinger on West Centre Street police said. After resisting, Dissinger arrested Santos who was then taken to the Shenandoah Police Station.
EMS treated him for a cut finger and bruise. Santos started to flail in his cell and complained of abdomen pain as he was being shackled for transport to Hazelton, police said.
Santos told police he had swallowed cocaine but said he was fine and did not swallow anything when EMS was informed. Santos was taken to Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson Street for evaluation, and tests showed Santos did not swallow anything.
Santos was taken to the state police station in Frackville. After a fingerprint scan, officers discovered Santos' his real name, and that Santos was a missing person according to the Bakersfield County Sheriff's office in California. The sheriff's department was notified, who said Santos was not wanted.
Santos was later taken to his actual address of 25 S. Catherine St. where he entered with his keys.
Police charged Santos with escape, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, false identification to law enforcement, public drunkenness and underage drinking.
Minersville man
not hurt in crash
SELTZER - A 34-year-old Minersville man escaped injury when the 2002 Ford Ranger he was driving crashed on Route 209, just north of Dowdentown Road in Branch Township about 11 p.m. Wednesday.
State police at Schuylkill Haven said Michael Grustas was driving south when he lost control and went onto the berm of the road and struck a pile of landscaping rocks and a stone wall.
The truck continued south for several feet before coming to a stop at which time Grustas fled on foot, police said.
The man was located several minutes later by Minersville police and after refusing to submit to field sobriety tests, was taken to Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson Street for a blood alcohol test.
Police said charges are pending the outcome of the blood test and that Seltzer firefighters and fire police assisted at the scene.
2 face charges
in Berks crash
HAMBURG - One person was injured when two vehicles collided at Topton Road and Long Lane Road in Maxatawny Township, Berks County, at 1:57 p.m. Tuesday.
State police at Hamburg said John M. Boyer, 54, of Allentown, was driving a 2004 Mack truck when he began to turn right into a driveway without using proper signals.
Karen L. Hoffman, 46, of Kutztown, tried to pass the truck on the right side with her 2011 Ford Fusion but the truck struck her left rear bumper.
Police said Hoffman was injured while Boyer was not.
Hoffman will be cited for overtaking a vehicle on the right while Boyer will be charged with making a turn without a turn signal, police said.
New Philly man
charged in crash
TAMAQUA - A New Philadelphia man suffered minor injuries in a one-vehicle crash at 11:27 a.m. Thursday on Mountain Road at Valley Road in Blythe Township.
State police at Frackville said Leon B. Koshnick Jr., 60, of New Philadelphia, was traveling northbound on Mountain Road in a 1998 Mack truck when he lost control.
The vehicle traveled off the eastern berm and struck a tree, shed and mailbox, then re-entered Mountain Road and traveled about 100 feet and struck a utility pole head-on.
The vehicle came to final rest against the utility pole facing north. The pole and shed were destroyed.
The vehicle sustained heavy front end damage and was towed from the scene.
Koshnick was transported to Schuylkill Medical Center-East Norwegian Street for evaluation of minor injuries.
Koshnick will be cited for failing to drive on the roadway laned for traffic.
Assisting at the scene was Tuscarora Fire Department and Pottsville ALS.
Boy, 15, facing
robbery charges
Pottsville police filed charges against a 15-year-old Pottsville boy Thursday for his involvement in a robbery that occurred at 11:28 p.m. March 31 in the 200 block of Downing Street.
Police said that during the robbery, a 19-year-old man was robbed at gunpoint of his wallet, cellphone and car keys.
Shayne Calloway, 19, of Sinking Spring, was previously charged for being the suspect who brandished the handgun.
During the robbery, the juvenile brandished a knife.
The on-going investigation led to the identification of the minor and on Monday, information was obtained that confirmed his involvement.
The juvenile allegation that was filed by Patrolman Brian Reno charges the minor with felony criminal conspiracy to commit robbery, felony robbery, theft, receiving stolen property, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and criminal mischief.
A hearing date will be scheduled for Schuylkill County Juvenile Court.
