3 men unhurt in

Haven area crash

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - Three men escaped injury in a two-vehicle collision on Seven Stars Road, about 540 feet north of Route 61 in North Manheim Township at 1 p.m. Saturday.

State police at Hamburg said Steven J. Skoloda II, 21, of Hamburg, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado south on Seven Stars Road approaching Route 61 when he made a wide right turn into the path of a 2007 Jeep Cherokee driven by Brian C. Toadak, 31, of New Ringgold, as it was making a left turn onto Seven Stars Road. Police said the Chevrolet Silverado collided with the Jeep's driver's-side door with its frond end, pushing the vehicle back several feet.

Police said Harry J. Zaprazny, 42, of New Ringgold, was a passenger in the Jeep. Police said both drivers and passenger were wearing seat belts.

Police said both vehicles sustained disabling damage and had to be towed from the scene.

State police at Schuylkill Haven assisted at the scene.

Man charged

in traffic stop

SHENANDOAH - A 26-year-old borough man is facing charges of DUI after a traffic stop by state police at Frackville at Route 54 and North White Street at 5:10 a.m. Saturday.

Police said they stopped a vehicle driven by Joshua Phillips for an equipment violation and found the man showing signs of being impaired. The man was given a field sobriety test, and police said charges of DUI are pending.

NEW PHILADELPHIA - One person suffered moderate injuries and a driver fled the scene when two vehicles collided at Route 209 and Water Street at 5 a.m. Sunday.

State police at Frackville said Troy Fisher, Pottsville, was driving a 2002 Ford Ranger east on Route 209 when he tried to turn left onto Water Street, failed to yield to traffic and was hit by a 2011 Kia Sportage that was being driven west on Route 209 by Denise Smolar, Tamaqua. After impact, police said Fisher exited his truck and fled the area on foot without trying to help Smolar, who was unable to get out of her SUV.

Police said Fisher will be cited as a result of the crash and that New Philadelphia, Kaska and Cumbola firefighters assisted along with Pottsville-Schuylkill Haven Area EMS.

robbery probed

WILLIAMSTOWN - State police at Lykens are investigating a robbery and simple assault that occurred at 120 Maple Lane, Apt. 10, in Williams Township, Dauphin County, at 9:55 p.m. Thursday.

Police said two black men entered the residence and one showed a silver handgun and both demanded money. The men placed several items into a garbage bag and fled in a silver minivan that was driven by a lighter-skinned or Hispanic man.

Three adults, two teenagers and an 8-year-old boy were in the apartment at the time of the robbery, police said.

The robbers are described as being about 5 feet, 8 inches tall and between the ages of 20 and 30, police said, with one having a thin build and the other a medium build.

Traffic stop nets

charges for man

WILLIAMSTOWN - A 49-year-old borough man will be charged with DUI by state police at Lykens after he was stopped for a traffic violation on Colliery Road in Williams Township, Dauphin County, at 12:21 a.m. Thursday.

Police said John Kennedy will have to answer to the charge before Magisterial District Judge Rebecca Margerum, Elizabethville.

Police said they stopped Kennedy and found him to be under the influence.

Charges pending

after checkpoint

State police at Schuylkill Haven said charges are pending against a woman in conjunction with a sobriety checkpoint that was conducted on the Gordon Nagle Trail, just north of Red Horse Drive in North Manheim Township, at 12:23 a.m. Saturday.

Police said Stacey Davis, 35, of Cressona, was driving a 2007 Mercury Mariner when she entered the checkpoint under the influence of alcohol. After being given a field sobriety test, the woman was taken to Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson Street for a blood alcohol test, police said.

Police said charges of DUI are pending the results of the test.

Police seek cause

of brush fire

State police at Schuylkill Haven are investigating an arson that occurred in a wooded area off Peach Mountain Road in Norwegian Township about 5 p.m. Sunday.

Police said someone started a brush fire on land owned by Grande Land LP, West Lawn, Berks County, and fled the area.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 570-593-2000.

Woman flown

from crash scene

SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS - State police at Frackville are continuing their investigation into a crash that occurred at routes 924 and 4033 in West Mahanoy Township at 3:40 a.m. Saturday.

Police said Angelique Lavariega, 38, of Hazleton, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox south on Route 924 when she failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection, went straight and struck an embankment head-on, causing her vehicle to go airborne into a wooded area.

The woman suffered numerous injuries and was treated by Shenandoah EMS and later flown to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, for further treatment, police said, noting that it appears that speed and alcohol contributed to the crash.

Shenandoah Heights firefighters and Shenandoah police assisted at the scene, police said. West Mahanoy Township police were not on duty at the time of the crash.
