City streets to get spring cleaning

This Sunday, volunteers are expected to gather in downtown Pottsville and arm themselves with brooms and trash bags, according to Patrick J. Murphy, owner of Murphy Jewelers, who will be among them.

"We're hoping to get more than 100 people to volunteer, from youth groups to service clubs to store owners and employees to people who love our city," Murphy said Friday.

The Pottsville Area Development Corp.'s newly formed Aesthetics Committee is holding its first "City Sweep," with help from the City of Pottsville, and the public is invited to take part, Murphy said.

The community cleanup will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the gathering point will be the Arch Street Parking Lot, located at North Centre and Arch streets. There will be refreshments, including hot dogs which were donated, Murphy said.

"And the weather looks like it's going to cooperate," Murphy said Friday.

According to the website for the National Weather Service, the weather Sunday will be partly sunny with a high near 79. There will be a slight chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2 p.m.

The city police will assist with traffic control and the city will collect and dispose of all trash which is gathered up, City Administrator Thomas A. Palamar said Friday.

In October, PADCO started to reinvigorate its aesthetics committee, a group concentrating on the appearance of downtown Pottsville. Murphy said he hopes it can encourage community pride and even attract state funding to revive a facade improvement program.
