Taxpayers in Kline Township will be paying more in 2012 after the board of supervisors adopted next year's budget on Tuesday.
The budget calls for a two-mill increase, from 7.212 to 9.212, that will increase the average taxpayer's real estate taxes by about $60 more in 2012 according to a township official.
Kline Township board chairwoman Carmen Cara noted that the township has raised taxes by only 3.75 mills in the past 15 years, with the last raise coming four years ago at 1.75 mills.
Kline Township has reached a point as many other municipalities regarding the higher cost of running government. "We're just going to have tighten our belts," Cara said after the proposed budget was passed earlier this month.
He noted that the township collects less earned income taxes, road materials for road maintenance has increased over the years and the expense of having a police department, along with higher fuel costs for police and township vehicles, has all contributed to forcing the board of supervisors to raise taxes next year.
"None of us want to raise taxes but sometimes you have no choice," Cara said after the budget was formally adopted.
Garbage fees will stay the same at $170 annually and the township will begin to have roads re-paved during the year.
