PennDOT said Thursday it is aware of the flooding that occurred on Route 61 near Ann Street in East Norwegian Township on Wednesday and it took care of the problem.

"The issue is our folks do know about this drain," said Sean Brown, state Department of Transportation spokesman for District 5, Allentown.

He said when it rains, debris and brush can accumulate near the drain, causing it to block up.

"It's not that the pipe can't handle it," Brown said.

The road was closed from 6:12 to 7:01 p.m. Wednesday, a representative with the Schuylkill County Communications Center said Thursday.

Crews from the Saint Clair and East Norwegian Township fire departments responded to the scene, according to the communications center.

Brown said a foreman from PennDOT was also at the site and cleared the area of brush and litter Wednesday.

"Stuff just clogs up and that happens when you have so much rain," he said.

Kevin Fitzgerald, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, State College, said rain started about 5:45 p.m. north of Pottsville and continued for about 90 minutes. Radar data estimated that up to 1 and 1/2 inches fell within that time frame, he said.
