Local Girl Scouts celebrate organization's 100th anniversary

HEGINS - Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of America, a celebration was held at the Sacramento Fire House on Saturday.

In attendance were former and current Girl Scouts and leaders, and the public.

Christy Leiter, event coordinator for Service Unit 329, said the unit applied to their Girl Scout council for a grant, which allowed them to hold the celebration.

Highlighting the last 100 years of girl scouting in the area and around the country, the day included several theme presentations, a fashion show of past scout uniforms, individual displays covering the past, present and future of Girl Scouts, and several guest speakers discussing the memories and merits of Girl Scouts.

Other activities for the girls included a scavenger hunt, making s'mores, crafts and basketball.

"We had each troop submit a display and we have nine troops in our service unit," Leiter said. "I think we're pretty close to almost having 100 girls in our service unit."

Leiter said there were different things on display that would tell a piece of history about girl scouting throughout the last 100 years.

At one of the displays, both former and current scouts wrote down some of their most memorable experiences as a Girl Scout. Some of their best memories were going camping for the first time, going to Hershey Park and being in a flag ceremony at a World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts event in Melbourne, Australia.

Another display highlighted famous Girl Scouts, including Ethel Kennedy, Condoleezza Rice, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Dakota Fanning.

"We also made favors for the event, have door prizes and have recognition to give to the leaders past and present and other volunteers," Leiter said.

Those that attended the event received a limited edition 100th anniversary patch.

Founded by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912 during World War I, the Girl Scout organization has been a mainstay in young girls' lives for the last century.

The 100-year celebration was part of many celebrations throughout the local council, Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania.
